e-mail article
i think this paper gets to the root of a college student, if you are in an activist program or not. many people always have a feeling of wanting to change how things are but never really know how to do it. though it did give many example what what you can do in your community and what groups that you can join. but personally i think that some of these groups are just a band aid on bigger problems. but from this article they explain how social change is not easy. but it seems like the key to change is the media, as in, instead of drawing away from the things that cause the problems like tv, they must be embraced. the only way to reach people is to use these media outlets and getting a handle on them. if people are doing all of these things and giving money to people who need it or protesting a business that's unethical there needs to be more mass appeal or else what's the point? (tree falls in the woods). some of these groups i have never even heard of before. but the ones i do see always try to use a shock appeal or give some large statistics to guilt some viewers out of some some cash or to stop them from doing something. (off the top of my head, the child relief fund and the anti tobacco adds) i think this whole approach is wrong. all activism needs is numbers of people instead of numbers of dollars to get things done. you can destroy money very easily but it's very hard to destroy an idea if a large number of people believe in it. i know that you need money for adds, so i kind of contradict myself but if you get enough people, you can make things happen.
